The number of escape rooms has exploded over the past few years. In fact, you can find them all over the world! But not all of these rooms are created equal. With so many different options available, it’s hard to know which room to choose.

Finding the best escape room

The most common question I receive from young people who are beginning their search for an escape room is: “Where should I go?” There are two parts to this. The first is finding a room. And unfortunately I don’t have a simple answer for that.

Each escape room in Calgary is different, and there is no way to compare one room against another. Every room is made for a specific purpose. Some rooms are puzzles-only rooms, some are immersive, some are interactive, and others take advantage of the physical space in which you find yourself.

You absolutely need to go out and experience them all! And don’t be afraid to try out multiple rooms if you can afford it. Your first time may not be your favorite. It’s more important than ever to go out into the world and try as many ways of experiencing it, from museums to zoos to theme parks, because those are all things that you might have missed out on if you’d never tried an escape room (due in part to the fact that it was an activity for your twenties!).

My second piece of advice is much more specific: find the best escape room in your area!

This is a very difficult thing to do. At the end of the day there isn’t a simple way that I can tell you how to go about determining this. How can you find the best escape room when you don’t know if escape rooms are for you?

This is likely what put most people off from beginning their experiment in the first place. They started out simply, trying out one room at a time, without any idea whether or not they would be into it. And because of this failure, many of them never attempted again.

I’m all for trying out new things and exploring bold ideas. But I’m also a firm believer that we should accept certain things as facts before we start to question them.
